EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A ceremony was held in East Providence on Saturday morning, renaming Carlton Avenue to Avelino “Chappy” Rose Way, who recently passed away at 101-years-old.
Chappy was born in East Providence in 1924. In 1942, at 18-years-old, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as a corporal in the 1883rd Aviation Engineer Battalion, an all-black unit attached to the 10th Air Force in the China-Burma-India Theater during World War II.
