With shelter open, Woonsocket officials say they’ll enforce camping ban with compassion

WOONSOCKET – Last Saturday seemingly marked a major turning point in the fight against homelessness in the city, but officials acknowledged at Monday’s City Council meeting that it’s far from the endpoint.

City leaders confirmed that the new Open Doors shelter at 181 Cumberland St. officially opened on Nov. 1, adding a net of 10 new beds and bringing the city’s total capacity for overnight shelter to about 130 once all facilities are operational.
