Woonsocket, Rhode Island — A routine traffic stop for a seat belt violation in Woonsocket resulted in the arrest of two individuals on serious drug and firearm charges, authorities confirmed on Saturday. The incident highlights the potential for seemingly minor stops to uncover illegal activity on local roads.

Traffic Stop Uncovers Drugs and Firearms

Police reported that Malda Tyks, 50, and her boyfriend, David Kennedy, 35, were pulled over on Holder Lane for failing to wear a seat belt. During the stop, officers discovered crack cocaine in plain sight inside the vehicle’s door panel.

Further investigation revealed that Kennedy was in possession of 2.2 ounces of fentanyl and a loaded magazine. Meanwhile, Tyks was found holding a firearm loaded with 9mm in her purse, along with a small amount of fentanyl. Authorities also recovered $933 from the vehicle. Some of the pills found have been sent for testing to confirm their contents.

Suspect Background and Charges

Police noted that David Kennedy is currently on federal probation and has a prior felony conviction, which significantly heightens the seriousness of the charges. Both individuals now face multiple drug and gun-related charges, including unlawful possession of controlled substances and illegal firearm possession.

Authorities emphasized the stop demonstrates the importance of routine traffic enforcement in uncovering criminal activity that could otherwise pose dangers to the community.
