Providence, RI – Rhode Island may be heading into a pattern that boosts its chances for a white Christmas this year as new federal outlooks show colder and wetter conditions setting up from December 13–26 — a key holiday travel stretch for much of New England.
According to NOAA, Rhode Island sits within a broad “Above Normal” precipitation zone covering the Northeast. This suggests an active storm track capable of bringing several systems into the region during the second half of December, some of which may produce accumulating snow depending on temperatures.
NOAA’s temperature outlook also pushes much of Rhode Island into a “Leaning Below Normal” temperature pattern. For coastal states like Rhode Island, colder-than-average conditions are essential for turning incoming moisture into snow instead of rain — especially around Providence, Warwick, and coastal communities influenced by Narragansett Bay.
According to NOAA forecasters, when colder air aligns with increased moisture, odds of building early-season snowpack rise noticeably.
