Audit: $145K of improper OT paid to nonunion employees in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A spokesperson for Mayor Brett Smiley’s office said the city does not intend to recoup more than $145,000 in years’ worth of improper overtime compensation, some of which predates the Smiley administration.

The overtime violations were found as a result of an internal audit, first reported by website GoLocal Providence. The review of nonunion overtime pay was handed over to the Providence City Council at an April 3 meeting.

The issue first arose in a March 18 letter to the city clerk by internal auditor Gina Costa who wrote the report was initiated following a councilor’s request about one unnamed employee. (The Providence City Council appoints the city’s internal auditor.)…
