Among the many things I learned during my time as the executive editor of The Newport Daily News is how passionate the congregation at Touro Synagogue was about their place of worship.

The rabbi at the time provided columns to our publication and the annual Washington letter reading in August always came with reminders of the importance of the event. That was just the tip of the iceberg; the congregation and Touro were part of the Newport community. But in the background, tensions grew over the rightful ownership of the building…
