‘A hero’: Providence mayor asks FBI’s Kash Patel to give $50K reward to tipster ‘John’

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Providence Mayor Brett Smiley requested Friday that FBI Director Kash Patel give an offered $50,000 reward to the tipster who helped police track down the Brown University gunman and killer of an MIT professor.

Smiley sent a letter to the head of the FBI, thanking Patel and other law enforcement agencies for the “130 uninterrupted hours” it took to solve the case that resulted from a six-day manhunt across New England.

In addition to “rigorous police work,” Smiley wrote the investigation was made possible thanks to hundreds of tips from Providence residents. But he singled out one tipster — identified only as “John” — for providing information that “stands out above the rest.”…
