‘She was a wonderful young woman’: Public intellectual Glenn Loury reflects on life of Brown University shooting victim Ella Cook

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — One of the leading Black public intellectuals in the country is reflecting on the life of a 19-year-old girl from Alabama who was one of two people killed in a shooting at his college.

Glenn Loury, an economist and professor emeritus at Brown University, recently spoke on his podcast, “The Glenn Show,” to talk about the mass shooting at Brown, where students Ella Cook and MukhammadAziz Umurzokov were shot and killed during a review class in a lecture hall at Brown Dec. 13. Since the shooting, police have identified Claudio Neves Valente, a former graduate student at Brown, as the shooter. Valente was found dead in a storage locker in New Hampshire on Dec. 16 with no motive proven as of Friday.
