Vietnam veteran receives long overdue Purple Heart

BRISTOL, R.I. (WPRI) — A 78-year-old West Warwick man finally received his Purple Heart — 55 years after he was wounded in combat.

Vietnam War veteran Joseph Machado was injured during a firefight in Vietnam back in 1971 while serving in the U.S. Army.

Though he was formally awarded a Purple Heart for his service, Sen. Jack Reed said Machado never physically received the medal due to “administrative oversight.”
