Smiley wants control of city schools, ‘block the box’ cameras in 2026

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Improving Providence’s financial health, addressing the housing shortage, and once again, attempting to end the state takeover of Providence schools by summer are among Mayor Brett Smiley’s legislative priorities for 2026.

The mayor outlined his proposals for new legislation during a briefing with reporters at City Hall on Wednesday afternoon, just one day after Rhode Island lawmakers returned to the State House.

For the second year in a row, Smiley said the city plans to file legislation that asks the General Assembly to end the state takeover of Providence Public Schools, effective by July of 2026…
