Experts question if Rhode Island DUI laws deter first-time offenders

After former Cranston mayoral candidate Maria Bucci’s criminal charges for driving under the influence were dismissed when she pleaded guilty to the civil charge of refusing a chemical breath test, people are wondering if the consequences for first-time offenders driving under the influence are severe enough to deter people when they are drunk.

While Bucci’s case is a high-profile example, the way her case unfolded is not unusual for first-time drunken drivers who refuse a breathalyzer test.
