Police Log: ‘Daughter’ Needs $20K for Bail; 4 DUIs

Tuesday, December 30

11:30 a.m. – An EG woman told police someone called her on Monday, posing as her daughter (the woman said the caller sounded like her). The caller said she had been in an accident in Providence and had been arrested for driving while intoxicated and needed to be bailed out. The “daughter” gave the woman a phone number and the person who answered said they were a “board-certified public defender.” The “public defender” told the woman to withdraw $20,000 from the bank, then deposit it into the Coinme machine at the Stop and Shop in North Kingstown. The woman deposited $10,000 before going to Stop and Shop in Warwick to deposit more money. The woman had deposited an additional $3,000 when an employee approached her and said she was likely the victim of a scam; the woman stopped depositing money. While at the police station, the woman called Coinme to report the fraud…
