Berkley officials warn of drastic cuts without override

The town of Berkley is staring down the barrel of an 6% budget cut, which would impact its schools, police, fire, and other public services, according to a letter from Berkley Public Schools Superintendent Melissa Ryan.

Selectmen said they would be presenting voters with a Proposition 2 1/2 override that would raise taxes to fund services — although the specific numbers in terms how much taxes would increase and how much new revenue would be required have not yet been finalized.

“Even a small override is going to lead to cuts in the town. So the number is probably going to be pretty big, and it might be shocking to some of the residents, but I’m going to try my hardest to keep it as low as we possibly can,” Selectman Tabitha McCrohan told the Gazette…
