A Taunton mother said that she called the state’s Department of Children and Families — which investigates allegations of child abuse — because her daughter, a Taunton High School student, did not have access to a GATRA bus on one particular day. The child walked for some period of time before calling a friend’s parent who then picked the child up, the mother said.
“They simply kicked the kids off of public transportation, told them to figure it out. I called DCF because to me that’s child endangerment,” Taunton parent Heidi Lebrón said during the public input portion of the Jan. 21 Taunton School Committee meeting. However, she indicated that the Department of Children and Families (DCF) had a lack of interest in investigating the matter.
“I was told by DCF to bring it up with the school,” Lebrón said. “Those temperatures are the temperatures that they open emergency shelters for the homeless because they’re considered dangerous temperatures.”…
