Encounter with Warwick cop left him paralyzed. Now he’s suing for $75M

Settlement talks are under way in a lawsuit that accuses a Warwick police officer of using excessive force in a 2023 encounter that left a man paralyzed due to spinal cord injuries.

Raymond Brehmer, 52, sued the city and Police Officer Normand Guilbert over a November 2023 incident in a parking lot on Post Road that resulted in him being gravely injured during an arrest.

Brehmer, of Warwick, is accusing Guilbert of assault and battery. He alleges, too, that Guilbert and the city violated his right to be free from unreasonable and excessive force and acted with negligence by failing to take reasonable care to avoid inflicting harm…
