PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A new rug in the Rhode Island State House somehow got the seal of approval despite having the wrong seal.
The $70,000 rug was installed Feb. 2 in the second-floor State Room, which is located next to the governor’s office and is often the setting for news conferences and ceremonial events, with Gilbert Stuart’s historic portrait of George Washington hanging on the wall.
But Nexstar’s WPRI discovered that the 1,125-square-foot floor covering has the wrong state seal stitched into it, not once but twice. Both bear the words: “Seal of Rhode Island and Providence.” Voters removed the phrase “and Providence Plantations” from the state’s official name in 2020…
