Some Providence city councilors still not sold on proposed rent control ordinance

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — As talks about rent stabilization continue at Providence City Hall, some city councilors remain undecided about the ordinance, which proposes capping annual rent increases at 4% with some exceptions.

Councilwoman Shelley Peterson, who represents Ward 14, said in a meeting of the Providence City Council Special Committee on Health, Opportunity, Prosperity, and Education (HOPE) on Monday that she’s still undecided because of the unknown impacts the ordinance would have on her ward.

Ward 14, which includes the neighborhoods of Elmhurst and Wanskuck, is home to Providence College. The college has nearly 5,000 undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education students…
