Man arrested after allegedly threatening Providence police chief

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A man has been charged after a car crash with Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez on Friday, according to a spokesperson for the police department.

An incident report provided by police breaks down the situation, which was captured in a video posted to social media.

According to the report, Perez was driving his unmarked police vehicle on Broadway just after 1 p.m. on Friday when he stopped for a pedestrian and was rear-ended by a white Nissan Altima. Perez pulled over and was about to get out to assess the damage when the driver of the Altima, identified as 31-year-old Jonathan Galdamez, left his car and approached the police vehicle “with an aggressive gait.”

In the video, Perez, who is in uniform, identifies himself as a police officer before beginning a verbal exchange with Galdamez. The police report alleges Galdamez blocked traffic and made “several direct threats to assault” Perez, who was trying to deescalate the situation…
