Providence police promotional exam under scrutiny after mishap

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – A Providence police sergeant was accidentally given a partial answer key during a high-stakes promotional exam, prompting an internal scramble at the department.

Late last month, 25 sergeants hoping to be promoted to a higher-paying lieutenant’s position arrived at the Community College of Rhode Island to take the required exam. The top 12 highest-scoring sergeants from that test would advance to the second round of the promotional process, with six of those put on a list to eventually be elevated to lieutenant.

The 100-question test was supposed to be taken on computers, but there was a technical issue. Instead, the proctor who was administering the test handed out old-school Scantron sheets, the type of forms where the person fills in multiple choice bubbles with an answer…
