School bus driver, monitor save choking student in Smithfield

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WJAR) — A local school bus driver and monitor are being celebrated for saving a student who was choking during their afternoon route.

Caroline King and Renee Grey were just getting started with their usual Wednesday afternoon routine on Bus 23 departing Raymond C. LaPerche Elementary School in Smithfield when shortly after turning on to Limerock Road, King heard students shouting from the back of the bus.

“We have very good kids on our bus, so for them to be yelling is kind of out-of-character for them,” King said. “So we were kind of like ‘What’s happening?’ I went back there and his face was red.”…
