Sharp increase in emergency room visits tied to e-bikes and e-scooters

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Hospitals in Rhode Island are seeing a sharp increase in emergency room visits tied to electric bikes and scooters, with Brown University Health reporting an increase of more than 170% between 2020 and 2025.

According to data provided by the hospital group, there were 21 emergency department visits related to e-bikes, scooters and dirt bikes in 2020. By 2025, that number had climbed to 285 visits. Over the last five years, Brown Health’s emergency departments recorded a total of 954 e-bike- and scooter-related visits.
