N.Y. weather: Severe storm risk in NYC Saturday evening; strong winds, hail possible

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — An Air Quality Alert is in effect for Staten Island Friday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., according to the National Weather Service, as hot and dry conditions build across the region. Residents should also prepare for the potential of severe thunderstorms Saturday evening.

The National Weather Service has placed Staten Island under a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms late Saturday afternoon and evening as a cold front approaches the region. Storms capable of producing strong winds and hail are possible, with shower activity lingering into a portion of Sunday.

Temperatures Friday will climb into the 80s across coastal areas including Staten Island, with dew point readings primarily in the 50s keeping humidity levels tolerable.
