ELMONT, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — Police are searching for two suspects who claimed to be laborers and scammed a 70-year-old Long Island man out of almost $240,000 for work that they never completed, the Nassau County Police Department said.
On Nov. 30, two men visited the victim’s home in Elmont and presented themselves as masonry workers. The strangers said that they would be willing to do construction on the victim’s house that needed repairs.
After the homeowner accepted, the faux construction workers continued to return to the house over the next two months to collect deposits from the 70-year-old that they said would pay for the planned work.
Police said these deposits totaled about $239,500, and the work was never completed. The victim eventually suspected the scam, and on Tuesday, contacted police.
