Perth Amboy Man Charged with Murdering His 80-Year-Old Grandmother

PERTH AMBOY, NJ — A Perth Amboy man has been charged with murdering his 80-year-old grandmother on June 30, according to an announcement from Perth Amboy police chief Lawrence Cattano and Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone on Monday, July 1.

Authorities received a 911 call at approximately 1:12 p.m. reporting that a female was found unresponsive in her home on State Street by a relative. Police responded to the residence and found Awilda Verrette, 80, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

As a result of an investigation conducted by Det. Jeremy Harris of the Perth Amboy Police and Det. Jose Rosario of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, police arrested Raymond Maldonado, 34, of Perth Amboy, without incident.

Maldonado has been charged with first-degree Murder and fourth-degree Contempt (violation of a Restraining Order). He is currently being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center pending the results of a pre-trial detention hearing.
