Affordability is more than building more housing. It includes providing essential gas, electric and power. Last week, the Public Service Commission held a public hearing to consider increases in electric and gas rates for Con-Edison consumers. This month customers already face another increase of 5.1 percent approved by the PSC last year.
For too long Con Ed has relied on regular rate increases borne by consumers as opposed to proper budgeting and limiting its shareholder profits. This month Con Ed is seeking an outrageous 11.4 percent increase in its electricity rate, hitting New Yorkers while the cost of living becomes harder and harder.
I stand with others, such as Queens Borough President Donovan Richards and Gov. Hochul, who say these increases are unacceptable. I am calling on the PSC to do the opposite and implement a rate freeze. As New Yorkers have cut down on their expenses, so should Con Ed…
