NY AG opens probe into NYPD shooting of man driving stolen Porsche

CANARSIE — AN INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN opened into the death of a Pennsylvania man driving a stolen luxury vehicle when police opened fire on him last Tuesday, April 29. The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) is determining whether the shooting was warranted in the death of Jumaane Wright, of Elkin, Pennsylvania, who was driving a Porsche that had been reported as stolen in that state. Officers were pursuing Wright on the Belt Parkway near Rockaway Parkway near Canarsie. Wright reportedly almost crashed into the NYPD officers who had set up a blockade, one of whom then shot him. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, requires OSI to assess every incident reported to it where a police officer or a peace officer, including a corrections officer, may have caused the death of a person by an act or omission.
