The New York State Nurses Association Condemns NewYork-Presbyterian’s Planned Layoffs Amid $750M Settlement

The New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) is slamming NewYork-Presbyterian (NYP) Hospital for announcing sweeping staffing cuts, calling the move unjustified and dangerous for patient care. In a virtual town hall held on May 5, NYP executives disclosed plans to eliminate 2% of jobs system-wide—impacting more than 1,000 healthcare workers—on the same day news broke about the hospital’s $750 million settlement with survivors of Dr. Robert Hadden’s sexual abuse.

Despite being New York City’s wealthiest hospital system and among the most financially secure in the nation, NYP leadership cited the need to take “action” while claiming the institution remains financially strong. However, according to NYP’s own 2024 Q3 financial report, the hospital system posted a healthy 4.5% profit margin. CEO Steve Corwin reportedly earned $14.6 million in 2023, while over 30 top executives each received more than $1 million in salary and perks.

NYSNA President Nancy Hagans, RN, denounced the cuts, calling them “outrageous and deeply offensive,” especially as NYP leverages fears over possible federal Medicaid reductions. She emphasized that NYP’s revenue from Medicaid accounts for only 14.5%, significantly lower than many of New York’s safety-net hospitals. “This hospital should be defending care, not padding profits,” Hagans said…
