The advisory stems from heightened heat and humidity, as well as elevated levels of ozone in the affected regions. The DEC’s air quality index (AQI) tracking utilizes the following measurement chart:
According to the DEC, the Lower Hudson Valley, NYC Metro, and Long Island regions have calculated maximum AQIs of 129, 143, and 101 respectively for Wednesday. This indicates an unhealthy air quality for sensitive groups, including young children, the elderly, and those with cardiovascular or respiratory ailments.
Those with air sensitivity concerns are encouraged to avoid intensive physical activity outdoors and limit extended time outside in general. The advisory will be in place through 11 p.m. on Wednesday.
