New York flood LIVE updates as cars submerged underwater and thousands left without power

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency in a number of counties before heavy rain, forecasted to pummel the city with up to 3 inches per hour, was set to pound residents. Rainfall may reach up to 5 or 8 inches in some remote areas, officials said.

A major storm system that might result in devastating flash floods is moving across a large portion of the US east coast from New York City to Washington, DC, and authorities are warning locals to brace for extreme weather.

New York, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, Sullivan, Ulster, Westchester, Delaware, Dutchess, Kings, Nassau, New York, Bronx, and Contiguous Counties are all included in the emergency.

Just after 7:30 p.m., New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) announced it had lifted previously issued warnings for flash flooding and severe thunderstorms. The city will remain under a flood watch until 8 a.m. Friday and a citywide travel advisory will persist through Friday afternoon, however, NYCEM said.
