Governors Island just made history–and your trip there just got greener and faster.
The Harbor Charger, New York State’s first-ever hybrid-electric public ferry, is now officially sailing passengers between Lower Manhattan and Governors Island. The new vessel debuted Tuesday, August 13th, marking a milestone in NYC’s maritime history and coinciding with the island’s 20th anniversary of opening to the public.
Built with over 465 tons of steel (that’s roughly the equivalent of 11 subway cars), the $33 million ferry can carry 1,200 passengers plus 30 service vehicles at cruising speeds of 10-12 knots–66% faster than current diesel-powered ferries, making for a faster, quieter, and more sustainable trip to the island…
