Baby illegal alligator rescued from Long Island pond, awaits new home

NEW YORK (PIX11) – A baby alligator was found in a pond on Long Island, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced Saturday night.

Officials say Environmental Conservation Police officers responded to a report of an alligator in a freshwater pond at Cow Meadow Preserve in Freeport, officials said.

A local birdwatcher who was nearby on August 7th, the day the call was made, provided officers with a clear photo of the gator. The birdwatcher stayed on scene until officers arrived.

Two Environmental Conservation Police officers, Franz and Pabes, along with a lieutenant, arrived and canoed to catch the reptile from the pond. The officers took the alligator to a local licensed alligator rehabilitator, officials said…
