I’ve been reading year-end letters and wow my friends and family have been through an eventful year.
Some of you have grandchildren; others have buried parents and siblings. Some have lost long time loves or found new ones. And through it all you have created new work, worked in community, opposed the WhateveritisintheWhiteHouse and tried to stay healthy Saludos!
This is a photo of the French film director Alice Diop who was in Bed Stuy earlier this year making a sort of documentary about the neighborhood. I had no idea who she was but chatted with her and her translator on Tompkins Avenue. They mentioned Robin Coste Lewis and well I told them I was a poet, and she went to The Word is Change bookstore down the street and got my book. Fascinating. I don’t quite know how I do it but I connect with all kinds of people just because I am a poet…
