The northern lights may be visible in NY, NJ tonight

NEW YORK (PIX11) – The northern lights could be visible near New York City tonight, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

While the best chances are typically farther north into upstate New York, Monday could offer a rare opportunity in areas just outside the city lights as a strong geomagnetic storm develops. A map from the NOAA shows the lights could even be visible in a small part of New Jersey.

Forecasters say conditions may peak just after midnight, with the best viewing window between 1 and 4 a.m. For the best chance of seeing the lights, head to a dark area away from city lights with a wide, clear view of the sky.
