Snow began falling across Oceanside, Island Park and the rest of Long Island on Sunday as a powerful nor’easter moved into the region, prompting a Blizzard Warning and states of emergency at both the state and county levels.
The National Weather Service issued a Blizzard Warning for Long Island from 1 p.m. Sunday through 6 p.m. Monday. Forecasters said snowfall totals could reach up to 18 inches in some areas, with sustained winds and gusts between 45 and 55 mph. A blizzard is defined as a severe winter storm lasting at least three hours, with winds over 35 mph and visibility reduced to less than a quarter mile due to falling or blowing snow.
