The push comes as Walmart accelerates plans to install the digital price tags in all 5,200 of its US stores within the next year, drawing criticism from labor groups who say the technology could allow retailers to exploit shoppers by changing prices instantly.
In a statement Friday, March 6, United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) criticized the move and urged New York officials to act before the technology becomes widespread.
“Lawmakers in Albany must act quickly and put protections in place now for New Yorkers,” UFCW International Vice President Ademola Oyefeso said. “No retailer should beat New York lawmakers to the punch and get to escape accountability for the harms these technologies will cause consumers and workers.”…
