Latino Population Surges Across NY Metro Area, With Biggest Growth in Suburbs, CUNY Study Finds

The Latino population across the New York metropolitan region has grown dramatically over the past two decades, but new research shows the biggest shift is happening outside New York City.

A report released by the Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies at the CUNY Graduate Center found that the Latino population in the broader metro region increased by 48% between 2000 and 2024, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The findings highlight a significant demographic shift as more Latino families move into suburban communities surrounding the city.
