Victims feel mixed on deed theft bills

State Sen. Leroy Comrie (D- St. Albans) held a press conference in Albany with members of the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian Legislative Caucus on May 6 to advocate for a package of deed theft bills.

“Too many families across New York are losing their homes to deed theft, foreclosure abuse and predatory scams, especially seniors and longtime homeowners who worked their entire lives to build generational stability,” said Comrie in an Instagram post on May 11. “We cannot allow people to be pushed out of their homes because of loopholes, fraud or systems that fail to protect them.”

Comrie is the prime sponsor of S.126, S.3077, S.9120 and S.5177, which if enacted, would establish a right to counsel in certain mortgage foreclosure proceedings, require proof of delivery for foreclosure proceedings, establish a Homeowner Foreclosure and Rehabilitation Revolving Loan Program and increase accountability on independent notaries and commissioners of deeds who place their seal on transfers of ownership and requires them to file a notarial record, respectively…
