SAFE Team Deputy Stops Alleged Street Race Near Clayton

CLAYTON, N.C. — Two Clayton men are facing charges after authorities said they were caught racing at speeds reaching 130 miles per hour on Interstate 42.

The incident occurred around 9:45 p.m. on June 2 while a Johnston County Sheriff’s Office SAFE Team deputy was conducting routine patrol on I-42 (U.S. 70) near Clayton.

According to the sheriff’s office, the deputy reportedly observed a BMW and an Infiniti engaged in a speed competition. Officers said the vehicles reached speeds of approximately 130 miles per hour before the deputy was able to stop both drivers…
