Roanoke Rapids police are investigating the death of 38-year-old Demetrius Fleming, who was discovered connected to a ligature in the city, prompting a public news conference and calls for calm from the department’s top official.
The initial 911 call, which came in from Roanoke Avenue, was reported as an attempted suicide, according to WITN. The caller was someone close to Fleming but was not present at the scene when the call was made, WRAL reported.
Police have not disclosed what type of ligature was involved.
