Tigers take another opening lesson from 7-A Comets 46-6

CLAYTON — For the second straight year Wilson Prep opened its varsity football season with a 40-point loss at Clayton High. Now the Tigers can hope the rest of 2026 turns out like 2025 that ended with them winning the NCHSAA 1-A championship.

The Comets, 7-A finalists last season, delivered a 46-6 thrashing that was really never much of a game from the start. Clayton led 29-0 before Wilson reached the end zone during the second quarter on a 20-yard pass from quarterback Justin Hicks to Tyquan Whitaker.

Clayton tacked on 10 more points before halftime and needed just one TD in the second half to start the running clock…
