The Wake County Sheriff’s Office is responding to reports of overcrowding at the Wake County Detention Center.
In a statement, Sheriff Willie Rowe said his office has been speaking with municipal police departments across Wake County about the jail population and has provided updates on current inmate numbers.
“Our office does not direct other law enforcement agencies on how or when to make arrests,” Rowe said. “When officers encounter an individual alleged to have committed a nonviolent offense, they may use the options available to them, including citations, when permitted by agency policy and applicable law.”…
