MORRISVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — The small medical plane that crash landed at Raleigh-Durham International Airport on Wednesday “bounced,” according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
According to an FAA incident notification, the Socata TBM700 with a registration number of N228CH “attempted to land, bounced and began a missed approach and crashed” at RDU.

A pilot and a doctor were on board the single-engine plane, which is owned by UNC Health’s Medical Air Operations. Pilot Art Johnson and Dr. Paul Chelminski were returning from Wilmington, where Chelminski had given a lecture to staff at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Both Johnson and Chelminski survived the crash landing. UNC Health said Chelminski was taken to UNC hospitals in Chapel Hill and discharged Wednesday afternoon, while Johnson was taken to Duke University Hospital in Durham in fair condition.
In addition to the FAA, the National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident.
