RALEIGH, N.C. — Twenty-two one-hundredths of a second. That’s how close Katharine Berkoff came during the 2021 Olympics trials to making Team USA in Japan. Berkoff swam a time of 58.82 seconds in the 100-meter backstroke, finishing fourth in the finals of the US trials. Regan Smith blew the competition away with a 58.35, but Rhyan White — a mentor of Berkoff’s — swam a 58.60 to qualify for the games while Berkoff was left at home after narrowly missing out on her Olympic dreams.
