Raleigh man arrested in connection to 1998 sexual assault cold case: Police

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Raleigh police said a man has been arrested in connection to a sexual assault that occurred over 25 years ago.

On Thursday, 58-year-old David Lee Toney was arrested in connection to an alleged rape and kidnapping that occurred in 1998.

Police said the evidence in this case was included as part of the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) initiated by the North Carolina Department of Justice. The investigation and subsequent arrest resulted from a positive Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) match.

CODIS is a national database that is made up of DNA profiles from convicted offenders, unsolved crime scene evidence and missing persons.

Toney has been charged with:

  • First degree rape
  • attempted first degree sexual offense
  • kidnapping
  • and assault inflicting serious bodily injury

As of Friday afternoon, no date has been set for his first court appearance.
