Incumbents prevail in Johnston

Voters in Johnston favored incumbents in most contested races on Nov. 5, while they also supported borrowing for the county’s public schools and community college.

Below are the results of contested races on the Johnston County ballot.

N.C. Senate

Republican Benton Sawrey, the incumbent, won 59% of the vote, easily defeating Democrat Felicia Baxter (38%) and Libertarian Christopher Sessions (3%).

N.C. House

In District 26, Republican Donna White, the incumbent captured 55% of the vote, outpolling Democrat Matthew Wood (42%) and Libertarian Kevin Terrell (3%)

With 69% of the vote, incumbent Republican Larry Strickland defeated Democrat Tawanda Shepherd (31%) in District 28.

School board

District 3 —Incumbent Kay Carroll (54%) defeated challenger Jason Shuler (46%).

District 4 — In the only school board race without an incumbent, April Lee (53%) defeated David Spain (47%).

District 6 — Incumbent Lyn Andrews, the board’s chairwoman, garnered 54% of the vote, defeating challenger Rick Walker (45%).
