CARY, N.C. (WNCN) — It’s an act of kindness more than a year in the making.
A Cary couple who found more than $1,000 a year ago gave the money to a family impacted by Hurricane Helene after the person the money originally belonged to never claimed it from Cary police.
Barb and Jerry Derome found the cash in an envelope while out on a walk last fall and gave it to police. Legally, they were allowed to reclaim the cash after a certain amount of time.
When CBS 17 spoke to the Deromes last year, they said if the owner never claimed it, they would donate the money. But they didn’t know how to find that someone.
“I just didn’t want to just give it away to an organization and not know,” Barb Derome said. “It was cash, it was actual money. You want to trust everybody, but you want to make sure it went into the hands of someone who truly needed it.”
Said Jerry Derome, “Based on what was happening in western North Carolina, we decided to try to give the money to someone there who really needs it.”
