A $19.6 million award from the N.C. Department of Transportation to S.T. Wooten Corp. will bring safety upgrades and a new bridge to New Hope Church Road in Raleigh as part of the S-Line Passenger Train project.
The project will add pedestrian accommodations, including bike lanes, along New Hope Church Road near St. Albans Drive. A new bridge will also be constructed to carry traffic over the railroad tracks.
Work is set to begin in January, with part of the new bridge expected to open by summer 2025. The entire project is slated to take three years to complete.
“The N.C. Department of Transportation’s Integrated Mobility Division is leading a transit-oriented development planning initiative for seven communities (Apex, Franklinton, Henderson, Norlina, Raleigh, Sanford, Wake Forest and Youngsville) on a 95-mile-long section of the S-Line rail corridor,” according to a report on the NCDOT’s S-Line website. “This segment of the S-Line is a missing link within the larger vision for passenger rail service in the southeast. To better prepare communities in the area for potential future rail service, this study is evaluating potential transit-oriented development opportunities in those seven communities.”
