Former Durham mayor honored with renamed street

DURHAM – “People. Progress. Purpose.”

Former Durham Mayor William “Bill” Bell sat in the Durham Performing Arts Center Friday morning as granddaughters’ Jianelise and Anysia spoke of those virtuous beliefs and commitments of their “Papa,” who was celebrating his 84th birthday. Bell, whose mayoral leadership spanned 16 years (2001-17), was celebrated for his dedication to finding a way to uplift people for progress and purpose through the dedication of William V. “Bill” Bell Way – the previously named Vivian Street adjacent to the DPAC.

“This was one of the best-kept secrets in my family – from me,” Bell said. The Durham City Council unanimously approved the renaming at a December meeting. Bell – known for attending events, fulfilling his obligations and stepping away quietly without fanfare – was in place for the duration filled with affirming anecdotes.

Former Mayor Pro Tem Cora Cole-McFadden, who served with Bell, noticed his recognizable mannerisms indicating she was speaking too long. “You can’t stop me now,” Cole-McFadden said to Bell, and an amused audience.
