Forecast: Severe storms with tornadoes are possible this weekend in Raleigh, central NC

Competing weather patterns creating unstable conditions across the South Saturday and Sunday, March 15 and 16, could bring storms with gusty winds, hail and possibly tornadoes to central and Eastern North Carolina.

When and where is the risk of severe weather in NC?

Saturday: The National Weather Service says there is a slight risk of severe storms in Western North Carolina on Saturday, and a marginal risk in the western Piedmont and foothills.

Thunderstorms in the central part of the state on Saturday are not expected to be severe, though winds likely will increase Saturday night, with gusts up to about 28 mph possible in Raleigh and across the region.

Overnight, a few wind gusts could be up to 45 mph , forecasters say.

Sunday: Most of Piedmont, central and Eastern North Carolina are at a slight risk of severe storms from around 11 a.m. Sunday until after midnight. Rainfall amounts through Sunday night could total up to 1 inch in some places. Flash flooding in urban and low-lying areas is possible…
