Tornado with 85 mph winds hit North Carolina on Sunday

FOUR OAKS, N.C. (WNCN) — A tornado briefly touched down in Johnston County early Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Raleigh.

Based on a damage survey, NWS Raleigh determined a “strong EF0” tornado with estimated peak winds of 85 miles per hour that touched down three miles south-southwest of Four Oaks at 4:59 a.m. and was off the ground less than a minute later. At the time, a line of storms was moving through the region.

“A carport was picked up and displaced approximately 100 yards downstream,” as a result of the twister, NWS Raleigh said, “while a portion of a roof was torn off an outbuilding and displaced 100 yards to the northwest.”…
